Nature Sketchbooks & Printmaking Workshop in Cornwall

Creative Printmaking & Nature Art Workshop with Artist Rachael Coward

For Ages 7–13 Years

Inspire your child’s creativity this summer with our Nature Sketchbooks & Printmaking Workshop, a hands-on art experience led by professional artist and Truro School Artist-in-Residence, Rachael Coward.

Designed for children aged 7–13 years, this exciting full-day workshop combines nature-inspired sketching with creative printmaking techniques, helping young artists develop confidence, creativity and new artistic skills in a professional art studio environment.

Hosted in the Art Studio at Truro School, students will explore the natural world through drawing, mark-making and printmaking, using leaves, flowers and natural textures as inspiration for their artwork.

Whether your child is an experienced young artist or simply enjoys being creative, this engaging workshop provides a supportive and inspiring environment to experiment with new materials, learn professional techniques and express their individual creativity.

What Students Will Learn

Throughout the day, participants will create their own nature-inspired sketchbook while exploring a range of exciting artistic processes, including:

  • Gelli printing techniques
  • Mono printing processes
  • Nature sketching and observational drawing
  • Exploring colour, pattern, texture and composition
  • Working with leaves, flowers and natural forms as artistic inspiration
  • Using a variety of materials including pencils, pens, chalks and mixed media
  • Building confidence through creative experimentation and artistic practice

Students will be encouraged to develop their own ideas and artistic style while creating a collection of unique artwork to take home.

Professional Art Studio Experience

Young artists will have the opportunity to work within the excellent facilities of the Truro School Art Studio, experiencing a creative environment similar to that used by secondary school and professional artists.

All materials and equipment are provided, so students simply need to bring their imagination and enthusiasm.

About Rachael Coward

Rachael Coward is a Cornwall-based artist, printmaker and arts educator living in the Carnon Valley. Originally from Somerset, she completed a Foundation Diploma in Art and Design before graduating with a BA (Hons) in Fine Art from Falmouth University in 2017. Inspired by Cornwall’s landscape, heritage and creative community, she returned to the county in 2020 after several years working across the arts and heritage sectors in both the South West and South East of England.

Rachael is currently the Artist-in-Residence and a part-time Art Technician at Truro School. She specialises in printmaking and teaches a weekly printmaking class for students. Her residency provides opportunities to create her own artwork using the school’s facilities while giving students valuable insight into the working practices of a professional artist.

Alongside her work at Truro School, Rachael works with a range of arts and cultural organisations as an art educator and creative facilitator, regularly delivering workshops for children, young people and families. Recent collaborations include projects with the National Trust, Tate and the South West Heritage Trust. She is also a former Co-Director of CAMP, a member-led network supporting the visual arts and creative community across Devon and Cornwall.

Working across printmaking, installation and artist books, Rachael’s practice explores themes of heritage, language, place and belonging. Her work investigates the relationships between people and spaces, creating installations and interventions that challenge, extend and reimagine the intended uses of a site. Through research, storytelling and making, she uncovers hidden histories and explores new possibilities for the future of places and communities.
